The best free antivirus is AVG Free. It has been rated by cNet (a highly trusted site that has reviewed thousands of items and programs) four stars out of five. It has gotten a higher score than even Norton AntiVirus or McAfee. Download it here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F...

And to answer your original question, you can, but download this and you won't have to worry about another virus again.

AVG is the only option for a free antivirus I know of, and it seems to work just fine.

AVG Anti-Virus Free

The other free versions of antivirus software out there are probably trial versions and won't be fully functional, or will have a time limit on how long you can use it.
There is no such thing as free and if something appears to be free it will have a fine print. In case of almost all free software, the put other software on your computer that tracks what you are doing, even send spam from your computer, and often steal your identity. I would say spend the 20 bucks.
no. my sister screwed up our computer doing that.

Yes, I switched from Norton to Grisoft's AVG Free 3 years ago and never looked back. Also during installation it scanned my harddrive and picked up 4 viruses on my machine the Norton didn't detect. Also my machine ran faster than with Norton.
